“God So Loved the World”

Readings

 

Out of love God created the universe and humanity in God’s image and likeness.

 

Out of love, God “pardoned our wickedness and sins,” and chose us and made us God’s own (1^st Reading).

 

Out of love, God “gave God’s only Son so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (Gospel).

 

And “the God of love and peace is with us” out of love (2^nd Reading).

 

Let us celebrate this day of God’s love.

Most Holy Trinity (June 12, 2022)

 

Everything

John 16: 12-15

  

God has created us.  Consequently, we belong to God. 

 

Here, Jesus tells us, “Everything the Father has is mine.”  At another time, Jesus said, “I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father” (John 15:15b). 

 

Now, the Holy Spirit will continue to tell us what Jesus has told us from the Father. 

 

Thus, we are drawn into relationship with God.  In this way, belonging to God means friendship with God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Holy Trinity (June 7, 2020)

God’s Life

Readings

We are not perfect, we are still the “stiff-necked people,” with “wickedness and sins." Yet, God is in our company (1^st reading).

In Jesus, God shares God’s life with us. 

This life is the life of God’s “love and peace” (2^nd reading) now, in this current life and continues into eternal life (Gospel).

Most Holy Trinity - C (June 16, 2019)

That Which is “Poured Out Into Our Hearts”

Readings

Jesus promised his disciples the Holy Spirit who “will guide us to all truth.”

St. Paul testified to his realization of this promise from Jesus, “The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

We continue to receive this love and truth of God – that is the mystery of the Trinity in our lives.

“I Am with You”

Matthew 28: 16-20

Today we listen to the very last passage in the Gospel According to Matthew and Jesus’ last words in this Gospel, “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

This sentence brings us back to the first chapter of Matthew, with revelation of the Messiah’s name as “‘Emmanuel,’ which means ‘God is with us’” (1:23).

In the incarnation, Jesus draws us into the divine mystery of the Trinity.  By his being with us “always” he makes us one with him – children of God (2nd reading from Romans 8: 14-17).

Such privilege!  Such love!

Commentary

John 16: 12 – 15

The Truth of God's Love

What are “the things that are coming”?

For the disciples listening to Jesus, the things they will soon face are the passion, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus. [1]

The Holy Spirit of truth will speak to the disciples the truth of God's love – culminated in the crucifixion of the Son.

The Holy Spirit continues to reveal to us, disciples of Jesus throughout the ages, this truth of God – the truth of God's boundless love.

It is this love we celebrate today in the mystery of the Holy Trinity. It is this love that brought us into being, and sustains us each day.
